What does teaching look like around the world?

In this article we propose that one way to organize observations of lessons is to look for themes visible in practice. For each of the TIMSS 1999 countries, we present a "theme" of mathematics teaching supported by both quantitative and qualitative data from the study. The themes may be used to prompt conversations among teachers and teacher educators about instructional options.
