PIER PROJECT

This project was led by Brad Ermeling (Educational Leadership Program, UCLA).

Project Summary

The PIER model (Plan, Implement, Examine, Revise) combines elements of Lesson Study (Stigler & Hiebert, 1999) and Getting Results (Saunders & Goldenberg, in press; Goldenberg, 2004): the result is a high school model of collaborative, systematic instructional improvement. A two-year case study at Lutheran High School in Orange County indicated that high school teachers responded favorably to PIER, and exhibited detectable changes in attitudes and teaching practices (Ermeling, 2005). The project utilized LessonLab technology as a catalyst to engage teachers in collaborative teams, observing classes with digital video and analyzing lessons through facilitator-guided, web-based tasks.
